Explosion W, owned by Ben Maher and winner of a gold medal at the Olympics, will not go to Denmark for next week’s World Championships.
At the Tokyo Games held the previous year, the duo triumphed individually, defeating Peder Fredricson of Sweden by a margin of 17-hundredths of a second.
But Ben Maher is now part of a four-man British squad that will compete in Herning, and he will ride Faltic B.

The rider from Essex, who is 39 years old, said that Explosion W “simply isn’t quite at his top fitness to take on the requirements of this championship.”
It takes a lot of effort to jump championship courses for many days in a row, but he is feeling good about himself.
“He is just too exceptional of a horse to put his well-being in danger; thus, with his wellbeing at the forefront of my thoughts, I decided that this was the wisest decision to take.”
Although Ben Maher has been successful in the European and World Championships in the past, he has not yet brought home a medal from the World Championships. Prior to his triumph in Tokyo in 2018, he won team gold at the London 2012 Olympics.
Scott Brash, Harry Charles, and Joe Stockdale make up the remaining members of the British showjumping quartet for the competition, which takes place from August 6-14.
